A basic full-frame mirrorless model that packs Sony's cutting-edge camera technology into the mix. The α7 III captures the moment with rich expressive power.
■ Full-size back-illuminated CMOS sensor and latest image processing system
A new 35mm full-frame back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with approximately 24.2 effective megapixels has been developed, and the image processing system has also been completely redesigned with a new generation image processing engine, BIONZ X, and a front-end LSI that supports image processing. By combining a back-illuminated image sensor with a gapless on-chip lens and AR-coated seal glass that reduces reflections, the standard ISO sensitivity has been increased to a maximum of ISO51200, covering a wide sensitivity range of ISO100 to 51200 (extended ISO50 to 204800), allowing high-sensitivity shooting with less noise even in dark or dimly lit places.
At low sensitivity, it achieves a wide dynamic range of about 15 stops (for still images). The all-new image processing system improves color reproduction, naturally depicting skin tones in portraits and vivid flower colors. In addition to 16-bit image processing within the system, this camera also supports 14-bit RAW output during silent shooting and continuous shooting, broadening the scope of expression.
■ 5.0-stop optical 5-axis in-body image stabilization function
Equipped with a highly accurate image stabilization unit and gyro sensor, and with an optimized image stabilization algorithm, it achieves a 5.0-stop correction effect, detecting various types of shake on five axes and providing high correction effects. The image stabilization effect during still image shooting can be checked in the live view image by half-pressing the shutter button or during focus magnification display.
Furthermore, the in-body image stabilization can be used with all E-mount lenses, as well as A-mount lenses attached via a mount adapter. In addition, it provides high-precision 5-axis image stabilization when shooting video.
■High-speed, high-precision AF performance that instantly captures and continues to track the subject
In addition to the renewal of the image processing system, the camera is equipped with an evolved AF algorithm, which improves AF speed, accuracy, and tracking performance. In addition to arranging 693 phase-detection AF sensors covering approximately 93% of the imaging area, the contrast AF has been multi-divided from 25 points in the previous model ``α7 II'' to 425 points, significantly improving detection accuracy. AF speed is improved by up to 2 times in low brightness, improving the focusing speed in dark scenes and capturing the subject instantly.
In terms of motion tracking performance, the increased read speed from the image sensor has increased the frequency of AF distance measurement and calculation during continuous shooting, and the latest motion prediction algorithm has been optimized for this camera, resulting in approximately double the performance of previous models. In addition, the evolution of the AF algorithm has achieved a lower limit of EV-3 (equivalent to ISO100/using an F2.0 lens) for the AF detection brightness range in AF-S mode, enabling highly accurate shooting even in dark scenes.
■Eye AF compatible with AF-C mode
The detection accuracy and speed of the Eye AF function, which detects the subject's eyes and autofocuses, has been improved, and it is now compatible with AF-C mode. Even in portrait photography with moving subjects, the camera continues to stably track the subject's eyes, and even in situations where it is difficult to focus, such as when the subject turns away from the front, when the subject turns around, or in a scene where the face is dark due to backlighting, the camera instantly detects the subject's eyes and focuses on them. When Face Priority during AF is set to [On], Eye AF is now automatically activated by simply pressing the shutter button halfway or the AF-ON button (only in AF-S mode). Eye AF is also supported when an A-mount lens is attached via a mount adapter.
■ Never miss a moment in full size with AF/AE tracking and high-speed continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second
In addition to adopting the latest shutter charge unit, the image processing system has been revamped to achieve AF/AE tracking high-speed continuous shooting at up to approximately 10 frames per second, which is twice as fast as the previous model "α7 II". Even during silent shooting without sound or vibration, continuous shooting at up to 10 frames per second is possible, so you can shoot without worrying about the shutter sound even in scenes where silence is required, such as on stage, or when you want to shoot quietly, such as wild animals or pets. Furthermore, high-speed continuous shooting at up to approximately 8 frames per second is possible in the live view method.
■High-resolution 4K video recording with full pixel readout without pixel addition
■Supports 4K HDR shooting using the HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) method, enabling instant HDR workflow
■ Compact and lightweight body with operability, reliability, and solutions that are useful on location
